    Plan Early, Plan Often

Capacity planning requires constant analysis to determine current and future needs and how to mitigate shortages across all of the elements of a data center. Often the shortage is not evident. For example; there may be adequate space, power, cooling and storage for your next project.  However, that project requires 24 ports on your network but you only have 12 ports left on the last card in your Cisco 6509. Those first twelve ports will be relatively inexpensive but those next twelve will be the cost of a 6509 chassis, a control card and at least one network port card. Often this is a shock to the business unit and the budget.

Each capacity must be tracked separately. There has to be a process to measure the incoming projects to determine the impact on capacity. The true goal of capacity planning is risk mitigation. Capacity planning is proactive in that the output of the capacity planning data is input to project management, expansion planning, facilities, engineering, internal business groups and senior management.

It can take up to two years to build an enterprise data center and a strong capacity plan can provide that foresight. That same plan can also optimize the facility until it reaches full capacity.
